Why do I need a crown on my tooth after my root canal when my tooth is fixed and it's not hurting anymore?
The reason that a crown may be recommended for your tooth after a root canal is because the tooth may have had a large cavity before the root canal was done. The cavities were removed and the root canal was done so that you won't feel pain on that tooth anymore but now the tooth is more fragile since a lot of structure was removed. Without a crown to protect the whole surface of the tooth it is more likely to break off when you chew. If a large piece of the tooth breaks off then the tooth may need to be extracted even though you don't feel pain on the tooth.
