Child's Visit

Your Child's Dental Visit

There are plenty of reasons why young children may be afraid to go to the dentist: maybe because it's a different environment with odd-looking tools, or they may have had uncomfortable experiences in the past. Maybe they even have older siblings or friends who have told them that going to the dentist is scary. Making sure your child has a positive dental experience is important to us because we know that if kids develop healthy oral hygiene habits at a young age it is more likely they will continue to take good care of their teeth as adults.

Amenities Especially for Your Child

We have a dedicated kids' play area to keep your child entertained and busy before they are seen by the doctor. Once your child is brought back into the treatment area, they will be greeted by a friendly staff member who will direct them to the prize area so they can look at dental goodies first. Your child will be shown a special coin they can win if they are good to redeem for a prize. Then your child will be brought into the treatment room with a TV playing cartoons of their choice. The dental assistant will take "pictures" of your child's teeth with our portable x-ray camera. No more scary contraptions coming out of the walls and leaving your child sitting in the room by themselves while the assistant has to leave to take x-rays. There is a comfortable chair in the room if you would like to sit with your child.

Next, the doctor will come in to explain to your child that we will look at and brush his or her teeth. If your child does need fillings or other dental work and is exceptionally nervous, Northpointe Family Dentistry offers nitrous oxide or "laughing gas" as a safe method to help relax your child for the procedure.

Convenient Hours

We have convenient hours planned around your child's school hours, but if you do come in during the school day we have school excuse notes ready for you.

How To Prepare Your Child for Their Dental Visit

Your child will be less worried about their dental visit if they know what to expect. You can go over what will happen at the visit with your child or even bring your child along to your dental exam and cleaning first. It is best to bring your child to their first dental visit by the time they get their first tooth or by one year of age.

Tips for At-Home Dental Care

Brush twice per day for two minutes each time! For infants that don't have teeth yet, use a wet gauze to wipe baby's gums and tongue so white plaque from milk does not accumulate. Once your infant has teeth you can start brushing the teeth and tongue with a wet toothbrush. You may also use a very small amount of children's fluoridated toothpaste smeared onto the toothbrush once teeth have erupted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Having the adult tooth erupt behind the baby tooth is fairly common, especially on the bottom front teeth. This is because your child's face and mouth are still growing and changing and there may not be enough space right now for the adult tooth to grow into the right spot. If the baby tooth is not loose or has been loose for a long time but hasn't fallen out, Dr. Garza can help to painlessly remove the baby tooth. Leaving a loose baby tooth can cause difficulty when eating or can cause pain when brushing your teeth in that area.

We recommend scheduling your child's first dental visit when their baby teeth start to erupt or by the age of 1. It is important to establish a dental home for your child where they start to feel comfortable visiting and having their teeth checked and clean. If you notice dark or chipped areas on your child's teeth, it is important to have them checked to make sure the tooth does not have a cavity. Cavities in baby teeth can lead to tooth infection and pain if left untreated. Schedule your child's visit today and let us know that it is his or her's first visit so we can make it a special day!

Girl Scouts at the Dental Office

Girl Scouts, community service

We were happy to have a visit from a sweet squad of 6-year-old Girl Scouts last week. Dr. Tina Garza spoke to the girls about the importance of self respect and how taking good care of your teeth is a reflection of your self respect. Phyllis then took the girls and their parents on a tour of the office and showed them the equipment the dentist uses for dental checkups and cleanings. Finally a hands-on demonstration was setup with teeth, dentures, and toothbrushes so we could practice proper oral hygiene ...
