Preventive Dentistry and Periodontal Treatment

Comprehensive Dental Exam

We recommend a full exam every six months where Drs. John and Tina Garza will examine not only your teeth and gums, but also your head and neck health. Next, the doctor will review the dental x-rays we took of your teeth with you on a large TV screen in the patient treatment room.

At Northpointe Family Dentistry, we use the most up-to-date portable digital x-ray machines for the clearest possible images of your teeth and to expose you to the least amount of radiation possible. Sometimes x-ray pictures alone can make it difficult for a patient to fully understand what may be wrong with their teeth, which why we also use intraoral cameras designed to take photographs inside the mouth so patients can easily see conditions such as broken fillings or calculus around the teeth.

The unique intraoral camera we utilize also has the ability to shine different wavelengths of light on the teeth to show us which areas of the teeth have cavities and which areas are healthy. Drs. John and Tina Garza want to insure that you can see everything we see in your mouth so you can make the most informed decisions possible about your oral health.

Professional Preventive Dental Cleanings

At Northpointe Family Dentistry, we strive to provide a thorough cleaning. Your teeth will look and feel cleaner when you leave. We employ advanced cleaning instruments that remove plaque and stains from your teeth using gentle ultrasonic vibration to shake the build-up off without scratching and damaging your tooth.

We also offer concentrated fluoride treatments and sealants to protect your healthy teeth from cavities. These are especially recommended for children on both permanent and baby teeth.

Periodontal Health Exams and Treatment

Periodontal health refers to the condition of the gums and bone around the teeth. Poor periodontal health can lead to bleeding gums, bad breath, and loose teeth. Research has shown a link between periodontal health and the health of your heart so it is just as important to take care of your gums as it is to take care of your teeth.

At Northpointe Family Dentistry, we will evaluate and take measurements of your gums and bone levels and update this information when we see you so that we can inform you right away when we see a change. Sometimes the gums can be unhealthy to the point that a scaling and root planing procedure (deep cleaning) is needed to clean the teeth deep down and get your periodontal health back on track.

Nightguards and Mouth Guards

If you or a family member is especially tough on teeth, whether it is due to having a habit of grinding or participating in sports with heavy contact that could lead to breaking teeth, we can design a comfortable, custom-fit mouth guard to help protect the teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

An exam and cleaning should be done every 4 to 6 months. The doctor may recommended a more frequent schedule due to periodontal disease or high caries risk.

An exam can be done without x-rays but the doctor will not be able to see areas between the teeth and within the jaws to check for decay and pathology (irregularities). We will keep your exposure to x-rays as limited as possible by using digital x-rays which is approximately 10% of the radiation exposure compared to traditional film x-rays and an xray apron with a thyroid collar to protect areas around the mouth from unnecessary exposure. Overall, the benefits from dental x-rays outweigh the cons of limited radiation exposure. However, if you continue to have concerns or questions please feel free to bring them up with the doctor at your next visit. We will not take x-rays if you prefer not to have them taken. Your concerns are our top priority!
